The Sunnydale neighborhood is currently in Phase 1A3, which includes the construction of a brand-new Community Hub. Anchored at the Southeast corner of John McLaren Park at the corner of Sunnydale Avenue and Hahn Street, the Sunnydale Community Hub will include a 35,000 sq. ft. campus of buildings and outdoor spaces that function as a gateway into the neighborhood and a space for community programs. This development is anchored by two new mixed-use buildings with high-quality affordable housing and commercial spaces on the ground floor, soon to be home to a grocery store offering fresh produce and retail spaces for local small businesses.

Four Communities Congratulations to Jose Hernandez, HOPE SF 2023 Scholarship recipient! Jose Hernandez is a lifelong resident of Potrero Hill, one of the four HOPE SF communities. Recently, Jose was awarded the HOPE SF Scholarship, an annual financial aid opportunity for HOPE SF youth aimed at reducing financial obstacles to achieving higher education. A huge congratulations to Jose and to all the HOPE SF 2023 Scholarship recipients!

Four Communities HOPE SF Wealth Building Portfolio HOPE SF’s wealth building framework was developed in collaboration between the HOPE SF Wealth Building Planning and Design Team, comprised of 13 Resident Consultants and members from the Partnership for HOPE SF, the Insight Center for Community Economic Development, and the 2020 community based participatory research project conducted by Young Community Developers.

Four Communities A NEXT PHASE FOR HOPE SF In 2020, the City and County of San Francisco passed Right to Return legislation which provides a housing preference to current AND former HOPE SF public housing residents—wherever they might currently live—so they benefit from rebuilt, subsidized units in their original neighborhoods in San Francisco. This policy and other key tenets of the HOPE SF program are centered on reversing the impacts of decades of disinvestment and neglect.

Esiah Thompson lives in HOPE SF’s Potrero Hill site. In his graduation speech at Starr King Elementary School, he referred to himself as a “young Einstein.” Esiah’s face was beaming, as he expressed his hopes and dreams for a better future for himself and his family. Stories: Residents and Partners In S.F., the future of public housing will share space with high rent homes Crews arrived this week in Potrero Hill to start building the infrastructure for the next phase of Rebuild Potrero, a 25-year plan to replace the eastern San Francisco neighborhood’s 619 public housing units with new apartments and nearly triple the density by adding almost 1,100 new homes. In a city struggling with a housing shortage, the $29 million in infrastructure work is hard for some people to get excited about. The laying of water lines, sewer mains and fiber-optic utilities is hardly creating a place you can lay your head at night.

Stories: Residents and Partners District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton unveils his Community Safety Strategy On Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2020, at approximately 8:54 p.m., shots rang out on Bertha Lane in Hunters Point. Two of our community members were left dead. Lamar “Chi-Chi” Williams, was 38 years old and Demarree Hampton was 30. I spoke with our District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton the morning after and learned he himself had been at the hospital, hoping these men would make it through.

Four Communities Keeping HOPE SF’s Promises: Reflections from Fred Blackwell Four years ago, Theo Miller, Director of HOPE SF at the Mayor’s office, started talking about “reparations” as a framework to acknowledge, reconcile, and heal systemic harm in our HOPE SF communities. I must admit that I was initially uncomfortable with the idea that the City and County of San Francisco were using this concept to describe and guide its work. That’s because for many Black people in the US, including me, “reparations” represents the government’s biggest unkept promise. It conjures up slavery, Jim Crow, reconstruction, segregation, redlining, and a vast amount of harm.

Stories: Residents and Partners Donors Establish COVID-19 Relief Fund for HOPE SF Residents In April, a generous donor gave $150,000 to provide grants to HOPE SF households of Black or Samoan heritage that had experienced a loss in income due to COVID-19. The grants help pay for bills, up to a maximum request of $2,000, including rent, utilities, car payments, child support, and medical bills. Another donor recently added $50,000 to the pot.

As a senior community liaison for Mercy Housing, Larry has his ears to the streets in Sunnydale, San Francisco’s largest public housing community. He helps ensure supplies are delivered to families in need, educates residents about COVID-19, makes wellness checks, performs contact tracing, and so much more.

On one hand, Hunter felt “blessed” that her son, Angel, received at least some form of live instruction each day from his teachers at the Mary L. Booker Leadership Academy, the San Francisco charter school he attended this spring. Educators also made themselves available through office hours, another plus. Then there were the struggles.
