Back to School Events Across HOPE SF
It’s that time of year when summer activities wind down, and school schedules begin to get started! While HOPE SF residents participated in many summer activities across HOPE SF sites, from the Hunters View Summer Luau Celebration to the Samoan Community Development Center’s summer programming and the Herz Playground reopening at Sunnydale, students of all ages are now saying goodbye to summer activities and getting their supplies and minds ready for the start of a brand-new school year.
To offer support to HOPE SF youth and families during this seasonal time of transition, HOPE SF communities held Back to School events for incoming students before the first day of school. At Potrero Hill, tables decorated with signs welcomed incoming HOPE SF students back to a brand-new school year. HOPE SF families gathered to share in backpacks, school supplies, and delicious treats as parents and students talked about hopes for the upcoming academic year.
At Hunters View, the Community Wellness Program and Resident Activities Coordinator threw an all-afternoon event celebrating Hunters View students and families with backpack giveaways, art supplies, an ice cream stand, and a taco bar. The San Francisco Public Library was tabling on-site, with inclusive books free for all ages. Incoming students lined up to compete at corn hole toss and had a great time. In speaking with residents, a rising 5th grader leaving the event was excited to get back to school and shared that they were looking forward to seeing their friends during the start of class. The line for the ice cream stand extended down the block, with HOPE SF youth joining the celebration and sharing their excitement for a new school year.
The Alice Griffith and Sunnydale communities also took part in the seasonal change and held Back to School events celebrating HOPE SF youth and families with backpack giveaways. Incoming students enjoyed the sunny end-of-summer weather and gathered to stock up on backpacks, notebooks, and writing supplies.
As the next generation of San Franciscan leaders, HOPE SF students deserve a quality education that fully prepares them for a bright future in a changing world. A huge thank you to HOPE SF community leaders for organizing spaces where students and families could come together to make sure that abundant resources are available for every student to see themselves in what they learn, and to explore the world around them.
